Religious Scholarships: Everything You Need to Know and Do

| TBS Staff

Are you ready to discover your college program?

If you need a little help paying for college, your local church, synagogue, mosque, or monastery might be a good place to start. Charity is a major pillar for most religious traditions. So, too, is education. This is especially true of education that is guided by spiritual inquiry. If this is a force that guides your education, you may be a great candidate for a Religious Scholarship. Whatever your faith, there is likely a foundation, organization, or house of worship with a fund set aside to help advance both your studies and the higher calling that drives them.

This is true whether you are deeply involved in faith-based activities, are seeking to further a career in the ministry, or even if you are a secular student who is also a devoted member of a religious community or congregation.

As with most scholarships, the starting point of your search should be the college or university you plan to attend. If your intended school has a religious affiliation, there may be faith-based scholarships available. If you attend, or plan to attend, a secular institution, consider reaching out to departments specific to your area of interest. This may be a religious studies department, a theological seminary, or an on-campus ministry. Make contact with these departments to see which scholarships or grants might help you advance your education.

Once you've completed this step, consider the almost endless array of scholarships designed for students of faith, offered by faith-based organizations, or earmarked for students who intend to advance a career within their faith. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive look at possible scholarship opportunities, whether you affiliate with a Western religion such as Christianity, Catholicism or Judaism; an Eastern faith such as Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism or Buddhism; an ancient faith such as Zoroastrianism, Shintoism or Afrikaner; or a non-theological ideology such atheist, agnostic or Wiccan. Because religion is such a broad and personal subject, our database is not limited by these categories, but this should give you a sense of the spectrum represented.

Below are an array of religious scholarship opportunities from a broad cross-section of religious organizations, foundations, corporations, and private benefactors. In each case, we will provide you with a direct link to either an application or application instructions.

As you proceed, note that deadlines pass and new opportunities emerge. If a deadline passed, revisit the linked site in a few weeks for updates and changes. And if you see anything out of place or are aware of scholarship opportunities we missed, let us know! And good luck in your search!
