As one of 12 schools in the State University System of Florida, the University of Florida in Gainesville has offered educational programs for more than 160 years. Additionally, UF online provides learners with access to more than 200 undergraduate and graduate degrees and certifications.
Designed for working educational professionals, UF’s online master of education program includes 36 credits that learners complete in roughly two years. Classes prepare students to work with individuals, groups, and in educational administration settings while building advanced knowledge of public school finance and organizational structures. Students take courses in educational leadership, public school law, communication in education, and data–driven decision making.
Participants also complete a supervised practice in school administration during one of their last two semesters. This practicum allows learners to work alongside a certified principal and gain at least 150 field experience hours. UGA’s online master of education in reading education emphasizes new and digital literacies. Designed for current teachers and literacy education professionals, the online program incorporates coursework from the school’s department of language and literacy education.
This 36–credit degree includes nine credits of specialized classes in integrating digital resources into the classroom, new literacies, and popular cultures. Students also take one course in reading instruction principles and practices before participating in a practicum in reading instruction and assessment. Learners complete 18 credits of elective classes and a three credit capstone course before taking a final exam.
Teachers from preK through grade 12 can enroll in UGA’s online master of education in reading education. Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and apply through the graduate school. Applicants with GPAs of 3.0 or above, strong GRE scores, and at least two years of teaching experience receive preference. Applicants also need to submit a statement of purpose, three letters of recommendation, and a resume.

Los Angeles, California

USC’s online master of arts in teaching offers learners two tracks. The standard online master’s in teaching (MAT) track delivers advanced coursework to K–12 teachers. Participants choose from concentrations in multiple subject teaching, secondary English, secondary mathematics, secondary science, and secondary social science. Learners complete coursework in four categories, developing competencies in educational theory, teaching strategies, language and literacy, and practical applications.
Additionally, the school offers an MAT track with a teaching English to speakers of other languages focus. Clemson University in South Carolina began as an agricultural college in 1889 and became a coeducational institution in 1955. Clemson’s online master of education in teaching and learning offers three concentrations. Learners can complete specialized coursework in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM); experiential learning for early childhood; or instructional coaching.
The STEAM specialization offers an interdisciplinary approach for working with K–12 learners. Alternatively, experiential learning for early childhood participants develop knowledge and skills to support education through play–based learning, family and community engagement, and insight into overall curriculum design. Finally, the instructional coaching concentration trains learners to transition into instruction or curriculum specialist positions; students pursuing this option need at least three years of professional teaching experience.

The University of South Florida, based in Tampa, functions as one of three schools within the USF system. USF’s online master of arts in physical education includes two tracks: one for current teachers and one for learners without teaching credentials. Both tracks include 30 credits of coursework to build knowledge and skills in physical education instruction. Core classes include foundations of educational research and foundations of measurement. Other required courses in instructional design and content, analysis of research and teaching, and clinical supervision allow students to participate in experiential learning exercises and activities.
Elective classes in grant writing, sports psychology, and sport in society help build an overall understanding of the role physical education plays in the lives of children and adults. Most classes include project–based assignments, and all students complete a comprehensive exam at the end of the program. Purdue’s online master of science in education in special education includes several degree tracks. Students can pursue a master’s–only track, initial special education licensure, additional special education licensure, or special education intervention credentials. The master’s–only pathway consists of 31 credits and no practicum requirement, whereas the initial licensure track includes 36–45 credits, student teaching, and a practicum requirement. Additional special education licensure includes 32–41 credits and practicum requirements.
All students enrolled in Purdue’s online master’s in education program complete coursework in special education curricula development and implementation; intervention strategies and research; social, legal, and ethical issues in special education; and identification, evaluation, and assessment of exceptional individuals. Learners also study the use of technology in the classroom, online learning, and transitional practices in special education.
Participants can earn Purdue’s online master’s in special education in as few as 20 months. Applicants must submit a resume, three letters of recommendation, and a personal statement as part of their application. Additional admission requirements include a telephone interview with an admissions adviser, GRE scores, and an application fee. Students must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. 9. University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign
The University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, founded in 1867, operates as a land–grant university and educates more than 47,000 students. Extensive library collections and expansive facilities function as part of the school’s 15 colleges and instructional units. UI also heads the University of Illinois System, which boasts campuses in Chicago, Springfield, and online.
The online master of education degree at UI includes two primary tracks: curriculum and instruction and education policy, organization, and leadership.
Learners pursuing a master of education in curriculum and instruction can focus on general education, bilingual and bicultural education, or digital learning. This track blends theory, research, and practice into curriculum building and pedagogical coursework. Bilingual and bicultural education students explore teaching strategies to best meet the needs of multicultural learners while gaining instructional competencies in English language instruction. 10. University of Central Florida
In addition to its 1,415–acre main campus in Orlando, the University of Central Florida occupies 10 regional campuses throughout the state. More than 68,000 students currently attend undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs at UCF, and many take at least some coursework online. Founded in 1963, UCF now offers more than 220 degrees to on–campus and online learners.
UCF’s online master of education in exceptional student education includes 33 credits of coursework. Learners complete classes in research fundamentals, instructional strategies, organization and collaboration in special education, and methods of behavioral management. Degree seekers also take part in a supervised teaching practicum. During the practicum, participants spend up to 40 contact hours observing and teaching exceptional students.
Ideal for educators currently certified to work with special education students, UCF’s program builds advanced skills in curriculum development and academic coaching. The degree emphasizes equity; differentiated instruction; and information access in exercises that encourage collaboration, experiential learning, and education best practices.

12. Texas A&M University
College Station, Texas
Texas A&M University in College Station promotes excellence, integrity, leadership, loyalty, respect, and service to almost 70,000 learners at its main and branch campuses.
Learners can complete an online master’s in special education at Texas A&M by earning a master of education or a master of science degree. Both degree tracks include 36 credits of coursework best suited for individuals with solid backgrounds in education, behavior, disability, and related fields. Students complete the program in two years along a sequential degree plan that begins during the summer.
Required courses include applied behavior management in the classroom, applied behavior analysis, and experimental design.
