How to Become a Forensic Science Technician
Most forensic science jobs require at least a bachelor's degree. Bachelor's students aspiring to a forensic science career often major in forensic science, biology, or chemistry. Many forensic science degrees offer concentrations in subjects like toxicology, DNA, or pathology.
Entry-level forensic science technicians and crime scene investigators often receive on-the-job training. Professionals who primarily work at crime scenes typically train under a senior-level investigator for an introductory period. Most forensic science technicians complete this training in less than one year and may need to pass a proficiency test or evaluation, depending on their employer.
Prospective forensic science students should look for programs accredited by the Forensic Science Education Programs Accreditation Commission, which recognizes programs that meet the highest standards of education in the field. Though not required, forensic science technicians can pursue certification through an organization like the International Association for Identification (IAI) or the American Board of Criminalistics (ABC) to demonstrate their expertise.
Bachelor's Degree Programs

Additionally, ABC offers three levels of certification to qualifying professional criminalists: diplomat, fellow, and affiliate, depending on experience and specialty.
All certification candidates must pass a qualifying exam. IAI certification exams typically cost $300 for IAI members and $400 for non-members. ABC certification applicants typically pay a $50 application fee and a $250 exam fee. Most basic certifications require applicants to hold a bachelor's degree and two years of field experience.
