Founded in 1839, the University of Missouri (Mizzou) was the first public institution of higher education west of the Mississippi River. Mizzou also is among the largest universities in the state with over 30,000 students enrolled. The flagship of the University of Missouri System, Mizzou offers more than 300 degree programs through 20 colleges. Formed in 2011, Mizzou Online offers online courses for 18 of the university's colleges and operates a distance-learning school, the University of Missouri High School. Through Mizzou Online, students can pursue more than 100 undergraduate and graduate degrees and certificates. While most of its online programs follow a semester-based format, the university also offers some self-paced courses. Mizzou Online, a leader in online education, allows students from around the world to interact via “virtual classrooms.”
