The University of Massachusetts is a public university comprised of five campuses – Amherst, Boston, Dartmouth, Lowell and Worcester (Medical School). Established in 1863 with its Amherst campus, the university system launched UMass Online in 2001. UMass enrolls about 73,000 students across its campuses. Designed for lifelong learners, working professionals and students throughout the globe, UMass Online offers more than 150 degrees and certificates and more than 1,500 online courses. Its internationally recognized faculty provide students with the same rigorous academic curriculum whether online or on-campus. Online students receive the same degree as their on-campus counterparts; UMass grants degrees through the campus offering the specific program. The university also offers competency-based learning.

Accreditation and Approvals

UMass Online is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.
Several of its programs also hold specialized accreditation, such as from the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, and the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.


Undergraduate tuition -- $125 to $1,980 per course (regardless of residency)
Graduate tuition -- $1,230 to $2,250 per course (regardless of residency)

Admissions and Transfer Info

UMass Online's admission prerequisites and application requirements vary by program and campus.

Anyone who holds a high school diploma or its equivalent can register for undergraduate, noncredit or graduate courses.

Applicants must submit high school transcripts, recommendations and SAT/ACT scores.

International students also must submit TOEFL scores.

Graduate degree applicants must hold a bachelor's degree.

Students can enroll in courses before being formally admitted into a UMass degree program.

The university offers three start dates each year.
