Each year, we award three $1,000 scholarships for the fall semester and three for the spring. Winners are chosen at random from among qualifying submissions.

For fall 2018, we are pleased to announce our three awardees. Each shares her thoughts on winning and the positives of attending school online:

Cara BaniUniversity at Buffalo

Cara is working toward a doctorate degree in curriculum, instruction & the science of learning.

“When I received the email that I was chosen as a recipient of this scholarship, it was on my birthday, and I thought, This is the best birthday gift I could’ve asked for. I had forgotten about applying and was feeling overwhelmed with how I was going to pay for school. As a full-time teacher and part-time math tutor, it is hard to fit in the time to attend classes on campus. Being enrolled in a fully online program allows me to follow my dreams and continue educating myself. Online education can give you the convenience of completing assignments according to your schedule. In addition, it saves the time of a commute. In my situation, I live in New Jersey and the University at Buffalo is located in Buffalo, New York. If not for online education, I would not have the opportunity to attend the college of my dreams.

“University at Buffalo’s online education program ranks as one of the top U.S. online programs according to U.S. News & World Report. A benefit of this program: the university’s research faculty design all of the courses. This past summer, I completed my first full semester attending the University at Buffalo online, and it was an amazing experience. The faculty answered questions in a timely manner, and Ji-Won Son, my advisor, created PowerPoint slides lecturing in them. This gave the feeling of learning in an actual classroom with a professor present. Further, using UBlearns for discussions with classmates and online journaling with my professors reassures me that I am obtaining the same overall experience I would as if I attended classes on campus.

“So far, I have had a superb experience at the University at Buffalo, and I am looking forward to this upcoming semester and the next two years. The technology, faculty and the quality of the courses is nothing less than what I expected. I am thrilled to be honored with $1,000 towards my degree and want to thank you for selecting me as a winner.”

Julie HamsaTexas Tech University

Julie is working toward a master’s degree in public health.

“I’m hugely excited about winning the $1,000 scholarship from Best Schools! This scholarship will be a great benefit for my college journey and will help me realize my goals. Taking courses online for a Master of Public Health degree allows me to keep working and go to school at the same time. However, tuition costs are high and taking a full class load is expensive. Scholarships lessen the burden of extra financial needs incurred in college and help me focus on learning and growing as a student.

“Besides continuing to work, online classes also allow me to attend a great school without upheaving my life to move to another city. I’m able to get a recognized degree from a reputable university, which would not be an option if I had to move or take classes on someone else’s schedule. I’m also able to interact with students all over Texas and beyond, getting a unique perspective on topics from a large group of people. Public health contains many varying functions across the community and globe, so having a wide group of people contribute to my learning process will be beneficial to my future career.

“The Texas Tech Master of Public Health program became certified through the Council of Education for Public Health. I was thrilled to learn Texas Tech began offering this degree program online. The staff is helpful and engaging with an impressive expertise in their field and the quality of students is impeccable.

“I am looking forward to this new path of my life and I want to thank for helping! ”

Staci RogersSouthern New Hampshire University

Staci is working toward a master’s degree in education.

“I am ecstatic that I won this scholarship! It comes to me at a time of great need, and I am grateful for it.

“I have been attending college online since November 2015 and have had great experiences with my classmates and professors. I chose to online coursework due to my location at the time; I was in rural Oklahoma and could not attend classes in person. What drew me to online coursework were the flexibility to complete the assignments and the ability to use technology in a constructive way. Southern New Hampshire University offered the program of study that I had dreamed of pursuing for a number of years: instructional design with technology. My goal is to be a teacher to teachers and to help guide them through using technology more effectively in the classroom. SNHU is helping me achieve that goal!”

Congratulations to Staci, Julie, and Cara! We’re glad we can help you reach your education goals. Best wishes on your studies and all your future endeavors.
