...that "Auld Lang Syne" means "long long ago."

At least that's the loose definition anyway. Technically, it means "old long since," but that kind of loses something in translation.

At any rate, this bittersweet melody, which we traditionally babble incoherently just as the clock strikes midnight on New Year's Eve, is actually based on a Scottish poem written by Robert Burns circa 1788. The basic sentiment of the song is that we should remember old acquaintances and past loves with warmth and fondness, even as we look to the year ahead.
