The 21 Best Majors For Becoming a Superhero

| TBS Staff

Are you ready to discover your college program?

What makes Batman so special? He’s just a guy in a suit. He’s got an awesome belt, incredible martial arts training, and billions of dollars to his name. But these things do not, by themselves, make a man capable of fighting crime by the shadow of night. It’s actually Bruce Wayne’s big fat brain that makes him so special. That’s right. Batman is wicked smart and crazy educated.

Tony Stark built the Iron Man suit in a Vietnamese prison and he knew how to do it because he graduated from MIT with a master’s degree in electrical engineering and physics.

And Thor? Well, Thor’s not actually that bright. But if you resemble Chris Hemsworth, you can probably coast through life on looks alone. For the rest of us, the lesser mortals who would dare to fight crime, face down evil, and preserve justice, a formal education is paramount.

Even superheroes go to college. I mean, that’s basically all the X-Men do. They all just go to one big mutant college up in Westchester, New York. Of course, their college happens to have a stealth bomber in a hangar under its retractable basketball court. But hey, it’s all about the campus amenities these days.

Anyway, unless you are an Asgardian demigod, read on. We’ll offer tips on the best majors for cultivating your unique set of heroic virtues. We’ll also give you a glimpse at some of the courses you might take in each of these majors and an idea of the day jobs you might be qualified for as you seek the perfect cover for your secret identity.

Alright. ‘Nuff Said. Behold, the 21 Best Majors For Becoming a Superhero:

1. Religious Studies

If you intend to summon powers of either an ancient or mystical variety, it is wise to be well-informed of the spiritual inquests that have driven humanity to its best and worst extremes. For both the purposes of becoming a virtuous sorcerer and defending the earth against fiendish necromancy, you must achieve expert status as a conjurer of divine and supernatural forces. Because frankly, if you don’t know how to balance your own chakras, how can you possibly hope to harness the prana for the purposes of fighting evil?

What It Is
Religious studies is a multi-disciplinary field in which you will study religious beliefs, practices, rites, rituals, traditions, mythologies, and histories. This cross-cultural major pays greater focus to religious tenets than theology, and as such, also incorporates dimensions of sociology, anthropology, philosophy, archaeology and history.

Relevant Courses

  • Comparative Religions
  • Literature of the Bible
  • Introduction to Zen Buddhism
  • Judaism, Christianity, and Islam
  • Eastern Philosophy

Career Opportunities

  • Social Worker

2. Zoology

Is it just me, or is every other supervillian some symbiotic half-animal/half-human type creature? The Penguin. Dr. Octopus. Gorilla Grodd. The Lizard. Catwoman. You get the idea. If you do get into the superhero business, at some point, you will probably earn yourself a half-animal/half-human nemesis. Frankly, if you don’t, you’re probably doing something wrong. But when it comes to facing off with one of these hybrid baddies, the more you understand about animal behavior, the better your chances at subduing your opponent.

What It Is
Zoology is the branch of biology dedicated to studying the animal kingdom. This includes research on the classification, taxonomy, habits, habitats, evolutionary trends, embryology, and ecosystem pertaining to animals both living and extinct, wild and domestic.

Relevant Courses

  • Animal Behavior

3. Aerospace Engineering

Superman makes it look easy, but it actually takes years of practice to fly without embarrassing yourself. Not only are power lines, billboards, and kites a constant danger, but you have no idea how much planning goes into airplane flight patterns. As a superhero, it is definitely your job to not crash into commercial airliners. So study up. Maybe take a few courses on air traffic control too. If flying is one of your superpowers, it’s good to understand some of the basic principles governing your movement, particularly as it relates to weather patterns, geography and the presence of any airborne, explosive ballistics. If you can’t already fly, but hope to one day design your own jetpack, air propulsion system, or interstellar silver surfboard, this major is probably a strong starting point.

What It Is
A course of study that prepares students to apply basic engineering principles and technical skills in the development, manufacturing, testing and utilization of aircrafts, spacecrafts and the technology and systems used to support them. This major will incorporate studies of related technology, design, development, inspection, maintenance, calibration, and report preparation.

4. Criminal Justice

The Amazing Spider-Man Comic Cover Nothing will bum you out more than spending a whole night rounding up bad dudes, dropping them off in front of the police station wrapped like cartoon characters in fishing net, then watching them walk because you didn’t have a search warrant. Unless you have a good contact for an internship with Judge Dredd, you need to learn about due process. Know the law before you run out in spandex and start nabbing crooks. Learn the ins and outs of proper police procedure, and the application of jurisprudence, and the maddening idiosyncrasies in the administration of justice. It’s one thing to ensnare a diamond thief in the midst of a caper. It’s a whole other thing to gather sufficient evidence to make the charges stick. And if you think everybody’s just going to believe you because you’re dressed like a dominatrix, you obviously haven’t spent a lot of time around lawyers.

What It Is
Criminal justice is the system of practices and institutions charged with the civic and governmental duty to uphold the law, deter crime, punish those who violate the law, detain and rehabilitate criminal offenders, and generally contribute to improved public safety, reduced crime rates, and strategies for ensuring justice is upheld for victims and perpetrators alike.

5. Molecular Biology

Learning the finer points of molecular biology has less to do with your superpowers than with the challenges inherent to your job. As a superhero, you can be pretty sure that once every six months on average, one of your many arch-nemeses will hatch some scheme that involves genetic experimentation on hapless victims, the reanimation of mentally-deranged corpses, or the manipulation of his own DNA to create a dolphinoid land-creature that ultimately ends up being less dangerous than he intends. (Actually, the splicing works out very poorly and the dolphin-monster lives in almost constant agony. Sad story really.) Anyway, as a superhero, you don’t just vanquish your enemies. What sets you apart from others is the mercy and unconditional virtue you show even to those you must face in battle. Study molecular biology and learn how to counteract the effects that a mad scientist might have inflicted upon himself or others. This course of study also gives you a leg-up on mutant discourse, if you happen to affiliate with the X-Men, X-Force, X-Factor or any other organization that has an “X” in its name.

What It Is
This is the study of activity between biomolecules in various cellular systems. If it sounds complicated, it’s because it is. This course of study deals with interactions between DNA, RNA, and proteins, with a focus on their biosynthesis, self-regulation and functions. Molecular biology also deals in the scientific space where genetics and chemistry intersect.

Relevant Courses

6. Political Science

As a superhero, you will have an alter-ego, the public identity that you use to keep everybody off the scent of your late night vigilante work. Most superheroes say this is necessary to help protect the safety of those closest to them. But really, it serves as an excuse to wear a really cool facemask. Either way, it’s a good idea to not simply establish a convincing everyday life, but if possible, to create an identity capable of wielding influence. Oliver Queen certainly thought so when he ran for mayor of Star City, a job that he held for one year while continuing to moonlight as the Green Arrow. Tony Stark was the Secretary of Defense for an exceedingly brief time before returning to the Iron Man suit. And Batgirl was even a congresswoman in the 1970s. Each of these heroes saw a distinct value in obtaining the legal authority to exert influence over laws and policies while continuing to engage in extracurricular heroics on the side.

What It Is
Political science concerns systems of government, political activities, civic philosophies, and the history of governance. This course of study deals directly with the theories and practices underlying political systems with an emphasis on the power dynamics, resource distribution, legal jurisprudence, and sociological implications of these systems.

Relevant Courses

  • Public Policy Analysis
  • Political Theory
  • Judicial Processes
  • Foreign Policy
  • Electoral Politics

Career Opportunities

  • Legislator
  • Lawyer
  • Judge

7. Athletic Training

Wolverine Comic Book Panel Naturally, superheroes are some of the most active people around. Even if you yourself can’t fly or leap over buildings, you can provide an absolutely invaluable service to your superhero community. What good is the Lasso of Truth if Wonder Woman sprains her wrist? Make yourself an indispensable member of the Super Friends by understanding exactly what the Amazonian princess must do to regain full range of motion without risking re-injury. Use your refined understanding of exercise physiology to help the Flash reach ever greater top speeds. Even apply emergency first aid skills in the event that Gleek, the space monkey, goes bonkers and eats parts of Robin’s face. The bonus here is that you’ll not only learn how to keep yourself agile, fit, and formidable. You’ll have the instructional skills to teach others, which may make you a strong candidate for leadership in the event of a crossover superhero team-up adventure.

What It Is
Athletic training is the specialized area of healthcare dedicated to the fitness and treatment of active people. Learn how to prevent and treat injuries, support rehabilitative activities, provide nutrition guidance, and instruct in the improvement of strength and conditioning.

8. Chemistry

Batman and Robin Comic Book Whether you’re attempting to disarm a doomsday device or simply seeking to better understand the likely impact of your extreme exposure to gamma radiation, you could learn a lot about the superhero game as chemistry major. If you anticipate a career in which you don the cape and cowl, be aware that you will occasionally stumble on an evil science lair, a mobile meth lab, or an industrial building with an array of mysterious, bubbling vats. As a chemistry major, you’ll know what substances are flammable, which combinations are likely to produce explosions, and which stuff you shouldn’t inhale if your superpower isn’t healing from cancer. Since most hazmat suits aren’t really designed for hand-to-hand combat or urban free-running, learning the Periodic Table and understanding the behavior of the elements could be a lifesaver.

What It Is

As a chemistry major, you’ll learn theory, employ mathematical equations, and engage in experimentation, all on the subject of matter. You’ll study the behavior of matter at the observable, atomic, and subatomic levels, achieving a greater understanding of the innumerable chemical relationships and reactions that comprise our world and universe.

9. Exercise Science/Kinesiology

You don’t have to work out like Hugh Jackman to know that most superheroes are physically fit. Perhaps if you are a telepath, you can accomplish a great deal of good while leading a fairly sedentary lifestyle. But the rest of us have to stay in shape and learn how to channel our physical gifts optimally. This is why it’s probably a good idea for an aspiring superhero to either major, or at least take a few electives, in exercise science. For one thing, peak physical fitness must be a major lifelong priority for you. If it takes you more than one try to get up off of the couch, you won’t be much good warding off zombie hordes, space invaders or sentient gorillas. Learn everything you need to know about getting into shape and staying that way as you age.

What It Is
Kinesiology is the study of human movement and how this movement impacts the body, with a focus on physical activity, health, exercise and athletic engagement. Your studies will incorporate elements of biology, psychology, nutrition, and the social sciences.

Relevant Courses

  • Exercise Physiology

10. Apparel/Textile Design

We’ve come a long way from Adam West’s paper-eared Batman, or even just from George Clooney’s nipple-armored Batman for that matter. If you’re going to be a superhero, you need to give some serious consideration to a disguise that is at once functional and fashionable. The Incredible Hulk looks pretty fabulous in shredded purple jean shorts but for most people, this is a hard look to pull off. Before you foil your first bank robbery, you’ll have to come up with your own idea for a costume. But consider that a superhero’s uniform is rarely just a uniform. The functional advantages of your uniform will depend largely on the type of hero work you plan to do. Whether you need something bullet-repellant, flame retardant or just something with highly breathable fabric—nobody wants to be rescued by a hero with pit-stains—your knowledge of fabrics and textiles could make a life or death difference. Learn how to design a costume that is effectively aerodynamic, capable of weaponization and generally cool enough to spin out into a movie franchise and merchandising campaign.

What It Is
As a textiles major, you’ll study the design, manufacturing, marketing and retailing of clothing and other textile products. Your major will also incorporate studies on the history of clothing as well as their economic implications and social impact.

Relevant Courses

  • Apparel Design
  • Promotion/Marketing
  • Sociology of Clothing
  • Product Development
  • Merchandise Management

Career Opportunities

  • Fashion Designer
  • Fashion Photographer
  • Industrial Designer
  • Professional Buyer
  • Clothing Retail

11. Dance

When you think of a superhero at work, you might not necessarily picture a dancer. But I would point out that spandex unitards are the staple attire in both professions. The reason is that both superheroes and dancers require a range of motion and flexibility that is possible with neither dungarees nor cargo pants. Of course, there’s more common ground than that. Dancing is like martial arts with less hitting and slightly more flouncing. Extensive training in dance could make you among the more graceful practitioners of your craft. Incorporating a few steps into your crimefighting repertoire will keep the enemy on his toes and make you the life of any Avengers afterparty.

What It Is
The study of expression through the medium of dance, this degree course will focus on the conveyance of ideas, emotions, and cultural identity through physical movement. You’ll study history, technique, choreography and a range of popular forms including modern, jazz, ballet and folk dancing.

Relevant Courses

  • Modern Dance Technique
  • Body Conditioning
  • Composition
  • Music Theory
  • Theatre

Career Opportunities

  • Choreographer
  • Dance Instructor
  • Athletic Trainer
  • Recreational Therapist
  • Performance Artist

12. Industrial Engineering

If you’ve ever watched a superhero TV show, you know that almost every single confrontation goes down inside, on top of, or adjacent to an abandoned warehouse. The more you know about layout, wiring and whether or not certain items are combustible, the greater your advantage in weaponized confrontation. And any time you charge blindly into a dark factory with only your military-issue nightvision goggles to assist, you’ll want to know where all the proper fire exits, safety equipment, and shutoff valves are most likely to be. In this course of study, you’ll learn how to navigate an uninhabited industrial complex, penetrate a supervillain hideout, thwart a diabolical scheme, and do so while showing the proper respect for occupational safety and health standards.

What It Is
As an industrial engineering major, you’ll learn the basics of factory, warehouse or hospital maintenance, enhancement, and organization. You also learn how these dimensions of factory operation relate to the equipment and personnel within.

Relevant Courses

  • Inventory Management
  • Engineering Statistics
  • Ergonomics
  • Production Planning
  • Facilities Design

Career Opportunities

  • Industrial Production Manager
  • Chemical Engineer
  • Sales Engineer
  • Logistician
  • Health and Safety Inspector

13. Journalism

This isn’t just because it happens to be the chosen profession of Clark Kent, Lois Lane, Peter Parker and countless others who moonlight as crimefighters. It’s also because investigative fact-finding is a big part of being a hero. In fact, working at the Daily Planet was the perfect cover for Clark Kent, so perfect that nobody ever seemed to notice that he was obviously just Superman with glasses. Because he was a journalist, nobody ever questioned why Clark Kent was always on the scene when danger struck, nor was editor in chief Perry White ever moved to ask why his reporter so frequently spent long stretches working away from the newsroom. It was assumed that Kent was tracking down leads, which was true. He just did it with the advantages of super-speed, x-ray vision and flight. You may not have these advantages, but as a journalism major, you’ll at least learn how to piece a story together the old fashioned way.

What It Is
As a Journalism major, you’ll learn how to research current events, engage in thorough fact-checking, compose and edit articles, and report through various print and electronic media.

Relevant Courses

  • Copyediting
  • Media Law
  • Mass Communication and Society
  • Broadcast News Writing
  • Reporting

Career Opportunities

  • PR Specialist
  • New Analyst
  • Reporter
  • Editor
  • Fact-Checker

14. Urban Planning

As a crime-fighting vigilante, you should know your way around a blueprint or a subterranean tunnel system. Excluding those who work either in intergalactic or interdimensional settings, most superheroes are city-dwellers. Whether this is because urban crime tends to cultivate heroic tendencies, because would-be caped crusaders generally relocate to metropoli in search of work, or because superheroes simply desire the bohemian variety and cultural diversity that one can only find in a big town, cityscapes are the hero’s natural habitat. I’ll wager you’ve never seen a masked man jumping from rooftop to rooftop in the burbs. In the city, people don't think twice about that kind of stuff. I'm pretty sure there are fitness clubs you can join in Los Angeles that base their entire program on roofjumping. Anyway, if you are going to be a superhero, you'll need a good working knowledge of your city and its many pulsing, breathing, and moving parts, including the people within.

What It Is
An urban planning major connects social sciences, economics, and politics to gain a better understanding of the complex interactions between the people, industries, government leaders, and public services that subsist collectively in city settings.

Relevant Courses

  • Macroeconomics
  • Sociology
  • Politics and Government
  • Urban Policy
  • Geography

Career Opportunities

  • Community Organizer
  • City Legislator
  • Public Advocacy
  • Urban Planning
  • Construction Management

15. Marine Biology

Obviously you’re expecting an Aquaman joke here. Nuts to that. Namor the Sub-Mariner was actually the original underwater hero. First swimming to the surface in 1939, Namor not only predated D.C.’s King of Atlantis by two years, but he even predated the Marvel Comics company that ultimately became his home. He first appeared in comics published under the umbrella of Marvel precursor, Timely Comics. The point is, Namor really sets the mold for superhero marine biology majors. Your degree may not give you superhuman strength, the ability of flight, or the amphibious physique that allows Namor to swim at incredible speeds, but you’ll gain his understanding of pressurized underwater environments, his distinctive knowledge of aquatic life, and, the ability to stay underwater for extended periods of time. Unlike Namor, you’ll need scuba gear to do that last one but as a marine biology major, you'll learn exactly how to use that equipment. Being a marine biology major makes you a pretty useful person when you consider that the earth is 71% water. That’s probably one reason that Namor has, at one time or another, fought alongside the Avengers, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four. So obviously, you can see that as a marine biologist, you'll have your pick of job opportunities.

What It Is
As a Marine Biology major, you’ll study the plants, animals and microorganisms that live in the oceans. You’ll also study the behavior of the oceans themselves, include the ecology supporting living systems, the impact of hydrothermal events in the ocean, and the connection between the oceans and global climate change.

Relevant Courses

  • Ichthyology
  • Marine Ecology
  • Marine Microbiology
  • Oceanography
  • Phycology

Career Opportunities

  • Aquaculturist
  • Fishery Manager
  • Wildlife Technician
  • Environmental Scientist
  • Aquarium Caretaker

16. Meteorology

Bad guys are always making weather balloons. Manipulating atmospheric conditions and simulating natural disasters is part of the job description. With a degree in meteorology, you will be uniquely qualified to recognize the sudden approach of seemingly implausible weather events. If your sunny afternoon in downtown Boston is suddenly interrupted by the onset of funnel clouds, and if those funnel clouds are spiked with angry sharks, well my friend … you have a Sharknado on your hands. Chances are this is not a naturally occurring weather event. But thanks to your degree in meteorology, you already knew that. Now is the time to spring to action.

What It Is
As an Atmospheric Science and Meteorology major, you’ll study the earth’s atmosphere, its relationship to weather patterns, and how to use this information to make informed meteorological forecasts. You’ll also incorporate the disciplines of physics, chemistry and climatology into your studies.

Relevant Courses

  • Meteorology Synoptics
  • Chemistry
  • Climatology
  • Atmospheric thermodynamics
  • Weather-chart analysis

Career Opportunities

  • Conservationist
  • Research Meteorologist
  • Environmental Scientist
  • Operational Forecaster
  • Weather Broadcaster

17. Human Development and Family Studies

Know thine enemy. It’s not all that unusual for a supervillain to come with a tragic backstory that involves a gambling louse of a father and a negligent mother with a bankrupting addiction to costly antique Russian Nesting Dolls. Oldest story in the book. It probably wouldn’t surprise you to find out that Lex Luthor had a mean and overbearing father, that the Joker came from a broken home, or that Loki never received the parental approval that he so desperately craved. Each of these villains is forever locked in the repeating patterns of childhood psychodrama, playing out evermore diabolical schemes all in an unconscious attempt to heal or simply compensate for the internal scars of their respectively traumatic formative years. As a superhero, you must be more than an enforcer. You must also be a therapist. The more you understand the tragic familial underpinnings of the Joker’s insanity, the better your chances of discerning his motives, anticipating his next moves, and saving lives.

What It Is
As a major in Human Development and Family Studies, you’ll explore the impact that one’s formative experiences have on physical, emotional and intellectual development, specifically within the contexts of family, community and society.

Relevant Courses

  • Child Psychology
  • Contemporary Family Issues
  • Human Development
  • Early Childhood Education
  • Human Sexuality

Career Opportunities

  • Guidance Counselor
  • Child Development Psychologist
  • Social Worker
  • Human Services Worker
  • Family Therapist

18. Public Relations

Being a hero isn’t all capes and daring rescue missions. Sometimes, you have to accept that you’re a role model with far-reaching civic responsibilities. People look up to you. Try to keep up a positive public image. You don’t want to make a big display of nabbing a bad dude just to have a bunch of impressionable kids catch you on a cigarette break in a nearby alleyway. Whether you like it or not, those kids will model their behavior after you. I mean, you can fly. If they see you smoking a cigarette, it could look pretty darn cool. But thanks to your studies in public relations, you’ll either have all the skills you need to issue a convincing apology letter to your public, or you’ll have the good sense not to get caught doing anything unseemly in public in the first place. If you think it doesn’t matter, bear in mind that Lex Luthor was once elected president. The reason? Better PR than Superman.

What It Is
As a public relations major, you’ll learn how to form, promote and protect the public image of brands, businesses, and individuals through the effective use of interpersonal and mass media messaging.

Relevant Courses

  • Principles of Advertising
  • Speech Writing
  • Image Management
  • Theory of Communication
  • New Media Tools

Career Opportunities

  • Market Researcher
  • Public Relations Manager
  • Advertiser
  • Event Planner
  • Multimedia Artist

19. Nutrition

Ever heard of a superhero with high cholesterol? The Kingpin may have Type II diabetes but Daredevil probably has perfect blood sugar and a resting heart rate of 40 beats per minute. Why? Because superheroes tend to keep healthy, balanced and nutritious dietary habits as a matter of occupational necessity. Knowing how, when and what to eat to optimize your body’s performance is an essential part of fighting crime. Conditions like GERD and gout may sound funny, but a bout of esophageal pain could put a serious damper on your response time to crimes already in progress. Remember that time the Green Lantern Corps couldn’t find Hal Jordan because he was keeled over in a bathroom with searing gas pain? Of course you don’t. Hal Jordan’s diet is inscrutable. Study nutrition so that you know what you’re putting into your body and how it will likely impact your health, energy and performance.

What It Is
As a nutrition major, you’ll study the correlation between food, nutrition, eating habits and wellness. This course of study will also incorporate dimensions of food safety, preparation, and human metabolic behavior.

Relevant Courses

  • Dietetics
  • Culinary Arts
  • Food Services
  • Sustainable Food Systems
  • Community Clinician

Career Opportunities

  • Personal Trainer
  • Nutritionist
  • Chef
  • Hospitality Worker
  • Health Educator

20. Nuclear Engineering

I assume this one doesn’t require a lot of explanation. As a superhero, you’ll confront nuclear threats with the same relative regularity that a librarian confronts late book returns. It’s pretty much an everyday event, one that you must be prepared to face without panicking or hiding under a pile of clothes in the back of your closet (which of course, is how most of would handle an imminent nuclear strike). Bottom line? One of your arch-nemeses will, at some point, hijack a nuclear warhead, place it on a timer, and depart the scene of the crime without leaving enough security behind. Your nuclear engineering degree will come in handy as you attempt either to diffuse the bomb or to survive in a post-nuclear apocalypse.

What It Is
As a nuclear engineering major, you’ll study the behavior of radiation and radioactive materials with a focus on the scientific principles, practical applications, and dangers inherent to the subject matter.

Relevant Courses

  • Chemistry
  • Computer Science
  • Radiation Safety
  • Nuclear Reactor Theory
  • Thermodynamics

Career Opportunities

  • Aerospace Engineer
  • Civil Engineer
  • Physicist
  • Astronomer
  • Nuclear Medicine Technologist

21. Landscape Architecture

World’s Finest Comics Because even a hero should have nice hedges.

What It Is
As a landscape architecture major, you’ll learn how plants, trees, topographical layout and other natural elements can be combined with human structures to create sensible, functional, and inviting spaces. You’ll consider the history, theory, and practical applications of modern landscape design.

Career Opportunities

In our many collective years of education, training and watching Captain Planet reruns on YouTube, we have determined that these are the best majors for becoming a superhero. Of course, if you have the ability to fly, or shoot lasers from your eyeballs, or teleport, or move objects with the power of your mind, chances are that you’ll excel in life no matter what you study. Something tells me that Wolverine could have majored in macramé and you still wouldn’t want to mess with the guy.

But who among us couldn’t benefit from a little self improvement? Choose the right major and it could become an indispensable part of your arsenal in the eternal battle to see that good triumphs over evil. After all, knowledge is the greatest superpower.

Just kidding … it’s telekinesis. Telekinesis is, objectively speaking, the greatest superpower. But yeah, knowledge is pretty awesome too.
